One dead in three-home fire

One person died and a teenager was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after a fire tore through homes including a duplex on Roderick Avenue in Coquitlam on Tuesday morning.
Residents called 911 after spotting black smoke billowing from the area. Coquitlam Fire Rescue arrived shortly after 9:10 a.m. to find heavy fire and smoke coming from multiple areas.
After speaking to a witness, first responders determined one resident was unaccounted for, according to Coquitlam RCMP. Firefighters later found one deceased person inside a home.

The person’s identity hasn’t been determined, according to Coquitlam RCMP.
An 18 year old was also taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters contained the blaze to three homes, two of which suffered “extensive damage,” according to Coquitlam’s acting Fire Chief Chris Fox.
At press time, firefighters were dousing hot spots while an investigation team was preparing to work on finding out what caused the blaze.
“Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and all those impacted by this tragic incident,” stated Coquitlam RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Adriana O’Malley in a release.
Police and Coquitlam city staff are working together to make sure displaced residents get the necessary support and resources.
