Updated: Burke Mountain shooting leaves man with life-threatening injuries

A 37-year-old man is in hospital after being shot Wednesday evening near David Avenue and Coast Meridian Road, according to police.

Officers found the man in critical condition at about 7:30 p.m. on May 17. He was shot while sitting at an outdoor table in a busy shopping plaza, police stated.

The perpetrator likely fled the scene in a stolen grey 2022 Honda Civic Touring, according to new information provided by Coquitlam RCMP. A vehicle fire reported 20 minutes later at Cape Horn Avenue and United Boulevard is “believed to be related,” police stated.

The shooting was likely targeted, according to the release.

“This area was highly populated at the time of the shooting which is very concerning as public safety is our top priority,” stated Coquitlam RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Alexa Hodgins in a release.

Police are requesting video footage from the area around Cape Horn Avenue and United Boulevard taken between 7:45 and 8:15 p.m. on May 17.

Anyone who saw the shooting or the fleeing car – or who might have dashcam or cellphone footage of the surrounding streets or alleys Wednesday evening – is asked to contact police 604-945-1550.
