Lacrosse stars to descend on Coquitlam this weekend
The 39th annual Trevor Wingrove Tournament will feature some of the best teams from Canada and the U.S.
If you know someone who plays lacrosse, odds are high that they’ll be in Coquitlam this week.
The best lacrosse players from western Canada and the United States are gearing up for the 39th Trevor Wingrove Memorial Tournament at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex, considered to be one of the most competitive in the country.
A total of 31 teams from across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and the US Box Lacrosse Association will compete in five divisions: U13, U15, U17 and two female-only U13 and U17 divisions.

“We are ecstatic to truly have the top teams in the male and female divisions compete in this year’s tournament,” stated Ryan Boivin, president of the Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association.
The Ridge Meadows Burrards, who will be returning to the tournament this year, dominated across a variety of categories at last year’s Trevor Wingrove tournament. Teams from the Burrards took top spots in the U13 and U15 co-ed divisions, and both the female-only categories.
There will also be teams from Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and Saanich represented at the tournament.
“The athletes from this tournament will go on to play for provincial, national, and collegiate teams and championships,” according to a press release from the organizers of the event.
Last year, two athletes from the Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association — Ben McIlhargey and Devyn Hartley — were awarded financial awards to attend and play lacrosse at two post-secondary institutions in the U.S.
The awards, the Trevor and Les Wingrove bursaries, were awarded to athletes who demonstrated a wide variety of qualities including sportsmanship, leadership and performance.
The tournament is named after Trevor Wingrove, a former standout lacrosse player, coach and referee in Coquitlam.
Wingrove, who played for the Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association from 1972 to 1983, played collegiately for Whittier College in California and played in two Mann Cup tournaments with the Coquitlam Adanacs in the early 1990s.
He died in 2010.
