Port Coquitlam honouring Hall of Famers with street banners, new PCCC exhibit

They reached the top of their profession — now half a dozen local athletes are going to be celebrated high above Port Coquitlam streets.
On Tuesday afternoon, city council got its first look at six new street banners that are slated to go up next month.
The banners, which are expected hang downtown and over the Coast Meridian Overpass, will feature six athletes in the Port Coquitlam Hall of Fame: Terry Fox, Chris Rinke, Dan Payne, Michelle Bowyer, Tina Racine-Connelly, and Mary-Anne Walz.

Coun. Steve Darling, who approved of the design, suggested moving the banners down Coast Meridian towards Prairie Avenue — where Christmas lights were displayed earlier this winter — to showcase the athletes in other pockets of town.
“It would connect the north and south side together,” he said. “It’s important because there are athletes from both the north and south.”

Staff confirmed there is money in the budget to expand the banners to Prairie Avenue, and would report back to council with updated plans.
The project also includes a new Terry Fox-inspired exhibit in the lobby of the Port Coquitlam Community Centre. The exhibit, Inspiring Local Champions, is expected to feature quotes and motivational messages from Fox and other elite local athletes.
The project costs $28,500.
