Here’s where to celebrate Earth Day in the Tri-Cities this year

If you’re looking to celebrate Earth Day this year, numerous events are popping up throughout the Tri-Cities to both celebrate the planet and encourage its protection. 

While Earth Day was on Tuesday, April 22, city events are scattered throughout the week. Here’s what’s happening.

PoCo is celebrating its second annual Earth Day event at the Public Works yard this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., rain or shine. The City will be giving away free bark mulch (it helps your garden by retaining soil moisture, keeping weeds out, regulating soil temperature, and promoting healthier plant growth compost) and compost (first come, first served!). They are also selling rain barrels, as a way to reduce water consumption, for $56.

Coquitlam

Coquitlam is hosting a Repair Cafe this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Maillardville Community Centre, where people can bring in broken things to be fixed for free. Residents can bring in one item per family for repair.

Coquitlam is also selling rain barrel and water timers on discount ($100 plus tax) until April 29. From April 25 to 28, its participating in the City Nature Challenge, and has walks on both Friday (meet at the City Centre Aquatic Complex) and Sunday (meet at the Mundy Park Field House)  from 10 to 11:30 a.m. to observe species and report it on the iNaturalist app. They are also hosting a number of gardening workshops throughout the week.  For a full list of Coquitlam events throughout the week, click here

Port Moody

Port Moody is hosting a full slate of events to celebrate Earth Day. 

On Saturday, residents can head to Noons Creek Hatchery from 9 to 11 a.m. to learn about wildlife around the creek and their role in stream health. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., you can then learn about Port Moody’s resident Great blue Heron colony with Burke Mountain Naturalists on the Shoreline trail. Meet at the Recreation Complex tennis courts.

On Sunday, there’s another event on the Shoreline Trail (meet at the PCT Stage at Rocky Point Park) from 8 to 9 a.m., this time to learn about shorebirds and songbirds. From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., you can visit the Tri-Cities Bear Aware booth at Bert Flinn Park to learn about coexisting with bears. Then, you can join the Burrard Inlet Marine Enhancement Society from 1:30 to 3 p.m. to identify marine plants and animals in the Burrard Inlet

Registration is required for every event except for the Tri-Cities Bear Aware booth.
