Fire tears through Coquitlam alternative school

A structure fire burned through the Coquitlam Alternative Balanced Education school Saturday night, prompting multiple fire crews to attend the blaze in the 1400 block of Foster Avenue in Coquitlam.

The Coquitlam RCMP’s arson unit is investigating. No injuries were reported.

As the building is not safe to enter, CABE Secondary will be closed Monday, according to a release from School District #43. Students are slated to take classes at Winslow Centre on Tuesday.

Surveying the scene on Sunday, retired school principal Ron Grender lamented the closure but praised the firefighters.

“I suspect that a quick response from Coquitlam Fire also saved this from being a major loss,” Grender wrote.

Police are asking anyone with video of the incident or the surrounding area to call Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2022-13914.

With a trauma-informed approach, CABE is intended to offer support to students Grades 10 to 12 who struggled with the structure and expectations of mainstream school.
